Barbaross 1941 (whitedoggames.com)

...From the company blurb:

Designed by Steve Pole (War in the Pacific: 1941 - 1945), Storm in the East: Operation Barbarossa is a beer-and-pretzels, two-player game based upon the Axis invasion of Soviet Russia in 1941. One player controls the Axis forces, the other the Soviets. Game components include 254 Counters and Markers, 40 Action Cards, a 22 x 34 inch map printed in one piece, a 16-page Rulebook, a Player Reference Card, and a 4-page Extended Example of Play.

Aspects of the rules are fairly innovative and bring a different slant to the campaign. At their core is a simple mechanism to simulate the vital importance of logistics - in particular, the way in which as supply lines lengthen German strategic options reduce - similar to that at the heart of White Dog's "War in the Pacific".

One of the effects of this mechanic is to replicate the historical pattern of the German invasion: a series of often very rapid advances punctuated by relative inactivity as the lead units wait for their logistical support to catch up.

Of all the war games that I've played recently, Storm in the East: Operation Barbarossa has grabbed my continued attention more than any other - its play-ability and different perspective has provided me with a fresh (and fun) gaming experience...I like the map - it gives me a very good sense of the terrain and strategic objectives.- Steve C.

Storm in the East: Operation Barbarossa by Steve Pole offers one of the finest overall efforts at the grand strategic scale of the stupendous impact logistics had on the success and failure of Operation Barbarossa. At first it's so subtle you won't catch its play value and the risks inherent in your early choices, but by mid-game, SitE will give you a different view and approach due to its emphasis on logistics and how that intersects with EVERYTHING else and that makes SitE worth a serious look. -- Smitty
